CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Reading and Language Arts
Word of Faith Academy uses the A Beka reading and language arts program, which is based upon phonics and phonemic awareness. This program, when integrated with state benchmarks, focuses upon decoding, fluency, comprehension, writing, research, and inquiry. The goal of this program is to produce students who can read and comprehend written text as well as communicate both orally and written with audiences of all genres.
Students are continually exposed and engaged in authentic literature, grouped with thematic units and state benchmarks.
Word of Faith Academy's reading/language arts program aides in the development of a love for reading through exposing students to a variety of books reflecting interests, communities, and situations that are familiar or of interest to them. Each subject area includes an extensive number of trade books which can provide background information and readings that build knowledge in each subject area. Additionally, Word of Faith Academy uses Accelerated Reader Program, which provides incentives for reading books of interest. This program is provided in conjunction with the local library.
Word of Faith Academy requires each student to participate in writing to a variety of writing prompts each week, in order to develop written communication. These students use their written pieces to produce writing portfolios, which are shared with parents and the community through special events, such as its Annual Coffee House and Hattiesburg American entries.
Reading and Language Arts Objectives:
- To decode written words easily and effortlessly
- To read written text with fluency, expression, and comprehension
- To use inquiry when reading written text
- To communicate, in writing, with all audiences and across genres
